Developing the profession
The College of Paramedics plays an active role in leading the development of the profession in both pre-registration and post-graduate career development. With the wide variety of careers now available to paramedics there is an emergent need for a full graduate profession.
Paramedic Career Framework – 5th Edition (Revised)
Published by the Royal College of Paramedics, this framework provides a clear structure for career progression within the paramedic profession across the UK.
Purpose
To guide paramedics, employers, and regulatory bodies on career development opportunities and educational requirements.
Four Career Pathways
- Clinical Practice – from Paramedic to Consultant Paramedic
- Leadership & Management – from Team Leader to Director
- Education – from Lecturer to Professor
- Research & Development – from Research Paramedic to Professor/Consultant
Tiered Structure
Each pathway has four tiers representing increasing expertise and responsibility.
Education Standards
Aligned with UK higher education frameworks (FHEQ/FQHEIS) and HCPC requirements:
- BSc (Hons) for entry-level paramedics
- PGDip/MSc for Specialist and Advanced roles
- PhD/ProfD for Consultant level
