E-Learning for Healthcare Partnership

The Royal College of Paramedics’ approach to e-learning is determined by the needs of its members. We aim to provide high quality, accessible online learning options for paramedics, wherever they work.

Since 2017 the Royal College of Paramedics and eLearning for Healthcare have worked in partnership to develop e-learning CPD specifically for Paramedics, providing bite-sized, problem-based learning to support paramedic practice and enhance patient safety.

e-Learning for Health (e-LfH) has a proven track record in developing clinically credible online learning for health professionals. Every session has been developed with the support of e-Learning for Healthcare’s Instructional Designers by a clinician with a specialist interest and significant experience in the subject. All sessions are then scrutinised by a Module Editor, all of whom are paramedics leading in their specialist subjects.

The e-LfH Instructional Design team has made every effort to make the theory elements of each session interactive. Sessions include case studies relevant to paramedic practice, which helps make the theory ‘come alive’. This is then followed by an opportunity for you to test yourself. Each session is ‘bite-sized’ and most should not take more than about 20 minutes to complete. The intention is that individual sessions can be completed on any personal device, whenever you get time. You can also choose to access single elements of each session (Overview, Case Studies, Self-Assessment, Summary) each of which can be completed in less than 10 minutes.

Every session has been developed so it can be used on any device: Smart Phone, Tablet, Laptop, or PC. This means you can access CPD whenever and wherever you choose. If you are interrupted, no worries: your device will remember where you left off and offer you the opportunity to start again at that point.

The programme focuses upon core paramedic learning. So whether you are a recent graduate looking to consolidate learning, or an experienced paramedic wanting to do some revision, there is CPD here for you. Module authors have ensured that the learning is applied to practice, with a focus on problem-based learning and case studies. Each module has been developed under the leadership of module editors with an expert interest in their respective subjects.

The programme is constantly being expanded and reviewed. For Newly Registered Paramedics it will form a key component of Paramedic Foundation Preceptorship.

Cultural Competence

Being culturally competent helps you respect and understand patients from different backgrounds so you can provide safe and effective care.

Cultural competence e-learning for healthcare professionals – basic modules on what culture is and why it matters in patient care (via RCSLT external resources).

Purnell Model for Cultural Competence – a widely used framework for understanding and applying cultural competence in healthcare settings (especially useful for student reflection and case studies).

Paramedic Diversity Project (Council of Deans of Health) – case study and insights into how diversity and inclusion are being integrated in paramedic education and practice Council of Deans of Health.

Equality and Inclusion

Understanding ED&I ensures you treat everyone fairly and without bias, improving trust and patient outcomes.

Neurodiversity

Being aware of neurodiversity helps you communicate and care for people who think, feel, or process information differently.

Sexual safety and discrimination

Experiencing abuse, discrimination, harassment and inappropriate behaviours can cause substantial distress, trauma responses and have a significant impact on our mental health and wellbeing.

Our responses and reactions are unique to each individual and can be compounded by experiencing multiple stigmas or discrimination. However, you may feel:

  • Fear
  • Anger
  • Guilt
  • Overwhelmed
  • Anxiety and stress
  • Sadness
  • Isolated and lonely
  • Unsafe
  • Numb
  • Feelings of shame and embarrassment

If you feel that you need support or your mental health has been affected, due to direct or indirect experience you can contact:

Raising concerns

For many people, the thought of raising a concern can make us more anxious and fearful, for fear of:

  • not being believed
  • judgement
  • shame
  • fear of punishment

It is important to remember that you are not alone and there is support. You can raise concerns by:

  • Speaking to a person you trust at your university
  • Speaking to a person you trust at your ambulance placement location
  • Speak to your local Freedom to Speak Up Guardian

The Royal College of Paramedics regularly holds confidential listening events in order for learners to share experiences with us in a safe space.

Sexual Safety and Safe Working Spaces Webinars

Between 2021 & 2022 a Royal College of Paramedics’ series of 5 webinars in partnership with Brabners Solicitors took place to promote safe working spaces within the ambulance service. These explored recognition of sexual harassment and inappropriate behaviour, raising concerns, and wellbeing support.

Student Safety Campaign

The Royal College of Paramedics, supported by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and The Ambulance Service Charity (TASC) are proud to speak out in favour of learner safety.

That's Not OK

Student Safety Pledge: #ThatsNotOk

As an educator, mentor, paramedic or colleague, I pledge to:

  • Champion a culture of safety, respect, and dignity for every student, regardless of background, identity, or role.
  • Speak out against poor behaviour, including harassment, bullying, discrimination, and sexual misconduct-because silence is not safety.
  • Listen to and support students who raise concerns, ensuring they are heard, believed, and protected.
  • Model professional boundaries and ethical conduct, setting the standard for respectful interactions in all learning and clinical environments.
  • Promote transparency and accountability, encouraging open dialogue and continuous improvement in safeguarding practices.
  • Empower students to say “That’s Not OK”, and ensure they know where and how to seek help safely and confidentially.
  • Commit to ongoing education and reflection, recognising that safety is a shared responsibility and a continuous journey.

Together, we create a learning environment where safety is not optional-it’s foundational.

It's Not Banter

Peer-to-Peer Safety Pledge – #ItsNotBanter

As a student, peer, and future paramedic, I pledge to:

  • Respect my fellow learners and foster a culture of kindness, dignity, and inclusion.
  • Challenge poor behaviour, especially when it’s masked as “banter” that causes harm or discomfort.
  • Speak up when I see or hear something that’s not OK, knowing that silence can be complicity.
  • Support those affected by inappropriate comments or actions, and never dismiss their experiences.
  • Reflect on my own words and actions, recognising that what feels like a joke to one person may feel unsafe to another.
  • Encourage open conversations about boundaries, respect, and wellbeing.
  • Be an ally to those who feel marginalised or unsafe, and help create a learning environment where everyone belongs.

Because real camaraderie is built on respect – not ridicule.

Let's Talk

Safe Space Pledge – #LetsTalk

As a peer, educator, or professional, I pledge to:

  • Be a safe space for students to share concerns, experiences, and feelings without fear of judgement or dismissal.
  • Listen actively and compassionately, recognising that being heard is the first step toward healing and safety.
  • Respond with empathy and discretion, never minimising or ignoring what
    someone shares.
  • Direct students to appropriate help and guidance, including trusted support services, safeguarding leads, and professional resources.
  • Stay informed about the pathways available for students seeking help, including Freedom to Speak Up Guardians, TASC, and institutional safeguarding teams.
  • Respect confidentiality, while ensuring safety and escalation when needed.
  • Encourage others to be #HereToListen, creating a culture where support is visible, accessible, and trusted.

Because being present, listening, and guiding can change lives
